Riverside, New Jersey has a rich and interesting history. Samuel Bechtold founded Riverside, first called “Progress,” in 1851 as a resort town. People came here to enjoy our forests, meadows, streams and ponds. In the summertime, Philadelphia became quite oppressive. So, it was a breath of fresh air to vacation in Riverside’s country atmosphere.
One of the oldest buildings in Riverside is the “Pavilion Avenue Hotel,” built in 1852. The building is still standing.
Riverside once housed the world's largest watch case manufacturer, doing business around the globe from the Philadelphia Watch Case Company Building. It was in an era when everyone carried a pocket watch. The building’s clock tower has become a Riverside landmark.
Riverside also is known for The BOOST! Company. In 1913, pharmacist Benjamin Faunce invented “Tak-A-Boost,” and served it to customers at his Bridgeboro Street pharmacy to help the medicine go down easier. BOOST!, a syrup/concentrate combining a blend of citrus flavors, remains a popular thirst quencher today.

The largest veterans service organization in
the world. Serving veterans and the community for 87 years.
Membership is open to wartime veterans. If you were in the military
including the Coast Guard during any period classified by Congress
as wartime (most recent period is Aug 2, 1990 to present) and were
Honorably Discharged you are eligible. Post meetings are the first
Friday of the month at 8:00 PM. The Ladies Auxiliary meets the
second Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM The Sons of the American
Legion meet at 7:00 PM on the second Wednesday of the month.
